THE BUS STAND - THE END

(This is Sequel of The Bus Stand - Part I)

An interesting incident introduces Aakash to her approximately 2 months ago.

March month just marched in with striking summer days sending bye bye to milder weather. It just stopped raining, ending the kiosk it created for the past 2 days. After that hard rain, it flooded the sewage, filled the Pot holes with dirt water, muddy and slipery patches all over the places, especially near the bus stand.

As unusual to most days, Aakash just happen to be standing in this Bus Stand waiting for his connecting bus. He worked little late that day and ended up missing the direct bus so he came to this connecting Bus stand. It was little bit crowded that day and its almost 7.30pm. Street light just did its duty by shining the road and the Bus Stand.

A bus came just empty enough to fit only 5 more people. There were college students already traveling in the front footboard steps(famously known as footboarding in chennai) and driver is yelling at them to get inside.. It came to a complete halt, close to the Stand. People were rushing and jumping to get inside including Aakash and another lady. Aakash is pushing himself to go inside. In parallel to him, that young lady wearing saree is also try to get inside which he barely notices in the rush.

At that instant moment, conductor who got frustrated with the heavy crowd, gave the double whistle to start the bus. Driver didn't see Aakash and the lady still trying to get inside from the back steps because college students standing in the front steps blinded his rear window. He was not able to view the back steps properly. He just starts with real push in his accelerator with the first gear and immediately changing to second one to move fast.

Lady is still not completely inside the bus, her one foot is in bus steps with her saree jamed between the people and another foot in the ground. She slowly losing her balance, slipped by the muddy patch.

"oooh, bussa nerutha sollunga... aaaaa.. naa vizhunthuduva(please ask to stop the bus, I still didn't got inside, lady shouted)", she is trying to control and get the grip inside but she couldn't because of the bus fast movement.

Aakash who is still on the footstep with one hand on the bus footstep handle. He just alarmed by the voice from the lady and immediately managed himself to hold her hip tightly in his other hand and tried pull her inside the bus. His try worked and got her inside saving her from a big fall.

It all happened in fraction of few seconds. People who are watching this, started shouting to stop the bus. Conductor whistled and bus stopped with sudden brake.. Everybody asked Aakash and the young lady to check whether they are ok and free of any injuries.

"Onnum illa..naanga ok... (nothing happened,We are OK)", Aakash replied the crowd and then the bus starts to move after conductor whistle..

Aakash and the lady slowly moved inside squeezing others and comfortably settling in the middle of bus. Both of them still yet to get out of that tensed moment.. Aakash broke the silence asking her, "Are you ok? Sorry I did not have any way to stop you falling except holding your hip."

She didn't wait for him to stop and started right back to say, "No, No.. Its alright.. If you didn't do that, I can't imagine what might have happened... Thank you so much". By the way, I am Rohini. Thanks again.. I won't forget this help". She just popped like popcorn in the microwave oven..

"You are Welcome. I am Aakash.", he replied..

They didn't talk after that and don't know what to talk until the stop came for her to get down.

May be its coincedence, next day they both met again in the same bus. She saw him standing in the back. Her eyes invited him close to her. He recognized that came close by.. She asked his bag so he can stand comfortably as she was sitting in the ladies seat. He gave his bag and relaxed a bit in the crowd. Looks like they might have see them before the incident in the bus but bother to notice close enough. They didn't talk much that day.

From that day on, Aakash plans to meet her every work day taking the connecting bus in this Bus Stand. They both say HI, HELLO and may have little conversation or two about their day.. They just felt the attraction and enjoyed the presence of each other..

Conductor's loud whistle sound just alerted him to come to real world. Its his stop actually. He got down and kept thinking about her while he was walking to his home.

"May be she didn't go to work today.. or May be she is not feeling well... I will see her tomorrow... Don't worry", he tries to console himself..

Days passed and time changed.. But he never saw her again.. He sometimes think about her, her sweet voice and talk to himself, "I don't what happened to her. Will I see her again? If I am lucky I might see her again. Its a small world afterall..."

THE END

***************************************************************************

Life is like a long train journey. We all travel to reach our own destiny. Some people get on in the middle and travel with us for the entire journey and never even bother to give a smile. Some get on to stay just long enough to make a strong impression and disappears when their stop arrives..

We think about them on and off but we still have to go on with our journey to reach our destiny.. Thats life :-)

Sanjaya Survives Again - Style or Sustance..

On the yesterday American Idol show, the much awaited results for this week is revealed. Lot of people from my yesterday post comments said that Sanjaya won't stay this round. But I was amazed to find out Sanjaya stays in the contest..

Is it his Style or Substance which keeps him in this contest? (This question reminds me of the good stories from Muthu and Bigthinkbig which came out in sulekha last week.. )

That's a easy question for many of us. They would definitely say, its the Style. His different hair style stuns and gets the young ladies. He is know the heartthrob for so many young American ladies. He is cute and smart.

But is he has substance, to come this far. Some say YES but most of them nodding big NO to it. He is a good singer but there were good singers who already been thrown out of the competition.. Its ridiculous to see that some already predicts that he will the American Idol and many trying to deny it strongly..

My questions, how he was able to survive this far and keep going ?? There is something which attracts the people to vote for him.. Is the true Style or Subtance?!

In my my previous post, I talked little bit about him and his family. Check it out, http://houstonvijai.sulekha.com/blog/post/2007/04/american-idol-a-nri-finds-spot-in-top-9-list.htm

THE BUS STAND - Part I

It is one of the hot summer evening in chennai. In the suburb area little outside the city, mild warm breeze from the sea shore with a bit of salty taste trying to make an impression with a mixture of fresh sand smell mooted by the summer rain drops which showed up a while ago just for 10mins. Soft Sun rays trying to vanish by slowly hiding on the back of the big building opposite to the Bus Stand creating a genial evening atmosphere.

"Ennappa innum ooru bus kuda varala. Inda timeku 2 bus varanume..(why there is no bus yet, there should be atleast 2 buses coming at this time)", voice from the locale passengers talking each other while they are waiting for the bus..

Aakash stands in the crowded Bus stand one among 50 or odd people scattered along the sides and over the platform near it. A steel structure supported by 4 poles with no roof stands in th middle for no use. Its the peak rush hour and everyday it gets crowded like this one. Its very rare to see this bus stand empty during the rush hours.

There are people in groups talking about their work day and trying to kill their time while waiting for their right bus. Smell of the fresh frying masal vada and bhonda reaching the standby's, threatening them to buy it. Some couldn't control their taste buds, getting trapped by the taste bug and ended up buying it, giving a taste to their mouth standing next to the vada shop.

"Oil rombha adigama irrukupola, irrunthalum rombha nella irrukupa"(criticising that oil is heavy but it tastes good), locale talking to his friend munching his vada.

Group of school gals murmuring about their teachers and laughing at them. Few people couldn't tolerant the heat and humidity, taking a sip of rosemilk(type of drink made with rose essence and milk) in the Cool drink shop next to the stand. Some others are trying to find a place to sit as they been standing for long time. A little girl in her teared down dress with deserted look carried a plate in her hand, asking for some change from the standing crowd.

Aakash just slowly scans around the people randomly and watching each scene rolling before him, at sametime he is looking for her. He also just want to get back home after a long day of work.. He somehow managed to get a bus from his office to this bus stand. He usually try to hit the direct bus but for the last 2 months he comes to this bus stand to catch the connecting bus to reach home..

Suddenly there is a disturbance. People saw a bus turning left on the roundana junction and coming close to the bus stand. Its already packed with more than 150 people on it. Conductor gave two, three whistle which means "Don't Stop signal for the driver".

Driver also took his command and try to accelerate the speed to not to stop but being a soft hearted person he just couldn't avoid those people standing. So ended up stopping little far from the Stop to avoid a full crowd getting in. Some people who been waiting for the bus ran to get to the Bus.

Aakash ran close to the bus but instead of getting in, he started looking out for her in the ladies side window(which is usually the left side of the bus). He went up and down, couldn't find the person he is looking, so ended up not taking the bus..

Its already quarter past seven(7:15pm) in the watch.

Another 15mins just melts down, another bus shows up little empty and everybody tries to get off jumping on each other to catch a seat for themselves.. Aakash got inside somehow and starts to look again for her and couldn't find. With a little disappointment on his face, he just got down and let this one go too..

"Why is she not at this bus either?! May be she left early or she coming late.. I don't know. Can I wait some more time", Aakash thought to himself.

Its almost 8:15pm and he already missed 4 buses. Another bus just shows up in the bus stand. He did the final search and couldn't find her in the Bus Stand. He is little worried but at same time don't know what to do..

He finally decided to get into the bus making up his mind to go home. He got inside and did look for her in this bus too but couldn't find her. He just stayed and bus started moving in its speed. While he was travelling, he just kept thinking about the way they met and how their friendship grew which refreshes his heart all time.

American Idol - A NRI finds spot in Top 9 list.

American Idol is another interesting show broadcasted by Fox channel. Its been duplicated to the local version all around the world now. We have Indian Idol hosted by Sony TV which actually originated from this American Idol concept. That would suffice for the intro.

It is the Sixth Season of American Idol which is aired on Tue and Wed days. In this edition, we have an NRI named Sanjaya Malakar who managed to get to Top 12 spots. He is all over the news. You can see article about him in all the newspapers. Thats a pretty amazing accomplishment is init?!

He first auditioned for American Idol on September 19, 2006 (just 9 days after Sanjaya's 17th birthday). When the Seattle American Idol Auditions aired on January 17, 2007, Sanjaya and his sister Shyamali Malakar became famous overnight as the siblings on American Idol.

He was born in the Seattle, Washington area. Sanjaya spent most of his life in the Seattle area, most recently in Federal Way when auditioning for American Idol, but has lived in Hawaii and California as well. Sanjaya and Shyamali’s father was a classic Indian (East) musician(no wonder he is a good singer!) and an Italian mother. Shyamali notes the importance of their father raising them around music, while Sanjaya credits him for giving them their American Idol-worthy voices.

Sanjaya credits both his father and mother with influencing his music. His father may have given the American Idol contestant his voice, but his mother surrounded him with music his entire life. Sanjaya calls his sister Shyamali his biggest ally and biggest competition. Shyamali has always been the one person Sanjaya could rely on to be honest with her feedback on his singing, which helped him grow as a singer.

Today is the crucial day for him. Whether his fate to remain in the contest or thrown out by the people as a big loser, we have to find out in tonite's show.

If you are in US and like to vote, Check out this site for info at http://www.americanidol.com/faqs/

I would love to see him go forward. But whether he goes forward or loses, he is a winner to have come this far. Lets give a big appreciate his good accomplishment by showcasing his talents. Show your appreciation adding your comments, may be I will try to send to him all via email.

Pizzaaa, Hot Pizza'ssss ... One Slice Rs.30

"Samosa, Samosaaaa, Hot Samosaaaa...... one for Rs.2", theatre shopwala use to yell during the intervals(not in city theatres). I remember those days when I use to go to the nearby theatre around my town and eaten hot samosa's and puffs.

I think very soon the trend will be like, "Pizza, pizza, hot cheese pizzzaaaaa... one slice for Rs.30"

What happened to our very own Hot samosa, Hot crunhy puffs, bhel Puri's and other tradition snacks? Is the Western food culture plaguing our society and trying to destroy our own food culture?

My wife who is in India right now on her vacation mentioned to me in our last phone conversations that its going really bad to worse from the last time we visited India.

She said, "I really wanted to eat puffs and Samosa's which we miss in US and they are nowhere to be found. Everywhere they are selling pizza's, burgers, french fries etc.,"

Looks like almost all the malls and big movie theatres complexes are now shifting to have the burger and pizza stands. They didn't stop there, new innovations show up everyday like COnniza's, pizza burgers and so froth. May be very soon, we won't find our streetwala's selling bonda's, samosa's and puffs.. They will all be selling hot cheese and vegi pizza changing with the wave to western food.

I know there were lots of political discussions aroused when McDonald's, Burger Kings shifted their attention towards our country and started shops all over country. But after a while, it all settled in and now nobody cares. Now there are 'n' number of other small vendors creating their own recipes to make money of this growing economy. We also try to ban Pepsi and Coke but they popped right back up with their creative ads.

I am not saying we should be venturing different food and culture but going to extreme of replacing our own food culture. * aaargh * I can't imagine it. That's not a good thing. In America too, they have other food culture including Indian making its way to every American kitchen's but not to replace their own burgers and sandwiches.. Just for a change only. We should accept other culture but not for the cost of losing our own identity.

When my boy grows up and visits India, he won't be any difference between US and India atleast in the food sense. That might be a good thing but not on a good perspective. Obviously every NRI has dreams to expose their kids to things which they enjoyed as kids(atleast for extent) but the way food culture is changing we might not have anything to show them...

Where are we going with this? Check out this article which came across, published in Dec 2006.

*******************************
Here is the small snapshot of that article,
As a result, obesity among India's 300 million-strong middle class is on the rise and dietitians warn that children in particular must change their eating habits now or risk serious health problems in the future.

"It's a very serious condition as obesity can lead to diabetes, heart disease and early heart attacks," said Ashok Jhingan, chairman of the Delhi Diabetes Research Centre.

"Many teenage girls are already suffering from diseases like polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is a condition that occurs in overweight females and disrupts menstruation, and other children have hypertension."
*********************************

Our food culture and heritage which is healthy and suitable for our own country is getting washed out and our kids are getting spoiled everyday. Can we do something about it? I know lots of parents taking precautionary measure by educating their kids on the pros and cons. But they are kids after all and they expose to different atmosphere everyday and we can't control them all the time.

It really worries the hell out of me sitting far away.. I don't know what you guys feel about it from India, especially parents with kids?

April Fools Game

Yesterday was April Fools day. I still remember those school days when I played with friends to pour ink on our opponent teams in their white school shirts and other pranks. Nowadays, we rarely get a chance to play prank on somebody. Still, we try to do our best to make fun of others .. Lets play this small game which might be bit of a fun...

This following dialogue uses many idiomatic expressions. Some of these idioms are correct, the others are false. See if you can spot the false idioms and replace them with correct idiomatic expressions. Idiomatic expressions are highlighted.

Don't try to look in the google. You won't find it. I will publish the answers by tomorrow.. Its not too hard.. Rock and Roll guys!!

I hope to receive an confidential proof email to move forward.. Will keep you guys updated...

Anna Nicole's mysterious life and death...

At one end, you have a school drop out who is a billioniare now and still leads the world's richest men list. On the other end, another school drop out became a model in Playboy magazine and queened as the Playmate of the Year 1993, ended up marrying 4 guys(specially one with 82 year old guy), burying her first son in his age of 20 and dying at the early age 39.

Two lavish lifestyles, two different path ended up in two deep extremes. It only happens in America.

I am not sure how many people were following the news about Anna Nicole's death. First of all, I didn't even know about her until my co-worker came and told me about her death. I have seen her pictures in magazines and news but I couldn't suddenly put her face together with her name.. So I am not sure how many of you can really relate her. I will try to make it interesting and worth while to read.

There is a saying in our side of the country about Elephant. "Whether it lives or dies its always worth something". Similarly, "Whether Anna lives or dies she always makes the headline news".

The weird thing of all, I still couldn't get over it is that when her dead body was in the martury her parents and her current husband is fighting for her burial rights. Her parents want to bury her in Texas whereas her husband wants to bury her in Bahamas. At the same time, her 1 year old daughter now has to know who is her true father out of the 3 men. Its a true story, believe it or not.

For Americans, its one of shocking and surprsing new of the past recent months. Anna Nicole was the past playmate model. She was a dream gal of America once upon a time.

While she was working as a waitress she married a cook at the restaurant. She was 17 and he was 16. The next year, she gave birth to their son, Daniel Wayne Smith.

She then became an exotic dancer, and in 1991, began taking modeling and voice lessons. In October of that year, she saw an ad in the newspaper to audition for Playboy magazine.

She then married a 82 old tycoon, lived with him for a year and half until he dies.. She fought with his son for the big chunk of money and settled down with another guy. She tried to make an impression in the Hollywood but with not much of luck she was out as fast she came in. After that, she ended up hosting Anna Nicole show which went on to creating a big buzz in the media.

She gave birth to her daughter 1 year ago and immediately after 3 days she buried her 20 year old son in the casket. He died in the same hospital when he visited to see his mom with a little sister. I guess he couldn't able to take it.

She found death unconsious in her hotel room one day. There were reports that she had overdosed herself. Her life had tons of mystery's and continues after her death too. Now, there is suit on the court to find out who is the father for her daughter. They took the DNA's of the possible guys and they yet to reveal the true father of her daughter.

What a mess in the life?! What a disastrous end? I was tempted to write this post with the great anguish that "Why can't people ever think straight? Can people also be like this?:" I think, "Only in America people take different lifes just for the sake of luxuries life and end up living a crappy life"

As I always say, every life of mother nature has something to teach us. From Anna Nicole's short mysterious life span, we can still get out with some simple lessons..
You can have ton's of money, still you can't buy a peaceful life. You should be content with you life and be satisfied with what you get and try to live a happy life..
Thats my take on it.. What is yours?

Non-violence Rocks - An Interesting True Story !!

Dr Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and founder of the MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, in his June 9 lecture at the University of Puerto Rico, shared the following story:

I was 16 years old and living with my parents at the institute my grandfather had founded 18 miles outside of Durban, South Africa, in the middle of the sugar plantations. We were deep in the country and had no neighbors, so my two sisters and I would always look forward to going to town to visit friends or go to the movies.

One day, my father asked me to drive him to town for an all-day conference, and I jumped at the chance. Since I was going to town, my mother gave me a list of groceries she needed and, since I had all day in town, my father asked me to take care of several pending chores, such as getting the car serviced.

When I dropped my father off that morning, he said, "I will meet you here at 5 pm, and we will go home together." After hurriedly completing my chores, Iwent straight to the nearest movie theatre. I got so engrossed in a John Wayne double-feature that I forgot the time. It was 5:30 before I remembered. By the time I ran to the garage and got the car and hurried to where my father was waiting for me, it was almost 6:00.

He anxiously asked me, "Why were you late?"

I was so ashamed of telling him I was watching a John Wayne western movie that I said, "The car wasn't ready, so I had to wait," not realizing that he hadalready called the garage.

When he caught me in the lie, he said: "There's something wrong in the way I brought you up that didn't give you the confidence to tell me the truth. In order to figure out where I went wrong with you, I'm going to walk home 18 miles and think about it."

So, dressed in his suit and dress shoes, he began to walk home in the dark on mostly unpaved, unlit roads. I couldn't leave him, so for five-and-a-half hours Idrove behind him, watching my father go through this agony for a stupid lie that I uttered. I decided then and there that I was never going to lie again.

I often think about that episode and wonder, if he had punished me the way we punish our children, whether I would have learned a lesson at all. I don't think so. I would have suffered the punishment and gone on doing the same thing. But this single non-violent action was so powerful that it is still asif it happened yesterday.

Samiya Upma & Forced Bachelors

It is a long tiring day. I got home around 7pm.

Nobody home, as my wife and son gone for vacation to India. Its just me, home alone. I just want to lay flat and would love somebody serve a hot fresh food. I know its not going to happen. So I rested a bit and think about the next thing.

I refreshed myself to get out of the Zombie zone and did my evening prayers. Its now time to worry about something to satisfy my starving stomach. I opened the fridge and its mostly empty. I don't see anything except the dosa dove and frozen stuffs. I was really bored eating the same old Frozen Parata's and dosa with sambar.

My mouth really begs for something better and fresh. It is used to some good varieties, as my wife was reasonably a nice cook especially specialist in north india type. I love her veg. noodles, mutter paneer and Biriyani's. Alright,OK! Stop thinking about that now.. I can't bring anything of that now..

Then I start to think about, "what can I prepare fast enough to get it done in 15mins to feed my starving belly and at same time not to miss the "Kolangal" Soap opera in SUNTV". There are only 2 dish options, its either going to Maggi Noodles and Upma. I decided to go for Upma as its healthier than maggi.

I was like, "Who invented this Upma dish?" Its the life saver for any bachelor who knows to cook. Upma is one of the easy to make dish famous and very well know in Tamilnadu and sourthern side. Incidently Upma and Forced Bachelorship(FB) goes very well together. Its is easy to make when its tough time surviving as the Forced Bachelor.

Its is not an easy and fun life. Its tough because heart and soul wonders about your family all the time when you are far away from them. There are lots of people worse than me lead a lonely life home away from home. People who work the blue and Kaaki collar jobs in middle east, Singapore, Malaysia only get to go their home every 2 or 3 years. They can't take their family with them because of their limited salary. Its not that bad for me. It just 2 months for me and my wife will back from India.

TV advertisement brought me back to real. OK! I need to make the Upma now. It can be made in Rawa or Samiya. I have the Bambino Vermicilli which is also called as Samiya(rice noodles), so lets make Samiya Upma. I still remember the recipe my mom sent me in her letter when I was a Bachelor.

Here you go,
I gathered INGREDIENTS:

2 Cups Samiya, 3 cups Water, 1/2 - 3tsp oil, 2 small chilli, 1 Onion, mustard and jeera seeds, curry leaves

Preparation:

1.Cut onion and green chillies into small pieces.

2. Put kadai ( pan ) on flame.

3. Add oil.

4. After oil boils add all the seeds ( mustard, jeera..)

5. Once mustered seeds starts sound add onion and green chilly pieces and curry leaves.

6. After onion fries ( onion changes into golden brown color) add water and salt.

7. Wait till water boiles heavily ( for about 10- 12 min)

8. Now pour Samiya gently ( without forming clots) by stirring with big spoon.

9. Stirr gently on low flame till all water evaporates

Samiya Upma is ready in just 15mins...min. Its right on time for the serial to start. I just took some in the plate and start to eat up with sugar on side watching it...

I love it man. It bought old memories of my teen age, when I use hate Upma for real. Now, its the food from heaven...WOW!!

Change Management by Azim Premji

11 Lessons on Change Management: Azim Premji

"It's not the strongest nor most intelligent of the species that survive; it is the one most adaptable to CHANGE" - Charles Darwin

"While change and uncertainty have always been a part of life, what has been shocking over the last year has been both the quantum and suddenness of change. For many people who were cruising along on placid waters, the wind was knocked out of their sails. The entire logic of doing business was turned on its head. Not only business, but also every aspect of human life has been impacted by the change. What lies ahead is even more dynamic and uncertain. I would like to use this opportunity to share with you some of our own guiding principles of staying afloat in a changing world. This is based on our experience in Wipro. Hope you find them useful.

First, be alert for the first signs of change.
Change descends on every one equally; it is just that some realize it faster. Some changes are sudden but many others are gradual. While sudden changes get attention because they are dramatic, it is the gradual changes that are ignored till it is too late. You must have all heard of story of the frog in boiling water. If the Temperature of the water is suddenly increased, the frog realizes it and jumps out of the water. But if the temperature is very slowly increased, one degree at a time, the frog does not realize it till it boils to death. You must develop your own early warning system, which warns you of changes and calls your attention to it. In the case of change, being forewarned is being forearmed.

Second, anticipate change even when things are going right .
Most people wait for something to go wrong before they think of change. It is like going to the doctor for a check up only when you are seriously sick or thinking of maintaining your vehicle only when it breaks down. The biggest enemy of future success is past success. When you succeed, you feel that you must be doing something right for it to happen. But when the parameters for success changes, doing the same things may or may not continue to lead to success. Guard against complacency all the time. Complacency makes you blind to the early signals from the environment that something is going wrong.

Third, always look at the opportunities that change represents. Managing change has a lot to go with our own attitude towards it. It is proverbial half-full or half-empty glass approach. For every problem that change represents, there is an opportunity lurking in disguise somewhere. It is up to you to spot it before someone else does

Fourth, do not allow routines to become chains . For many of us the routine we have got accustomed to obstruct change. Routines represent our own zones of comfort. There is a sense of predictability about them. They have structured our time and even our thought in a certain way. While routines are useful, do not let them enslave you. Deliberately break out of them from time to time.

Fifth, realize that fear of the unknown is natural.
With change comes a feeling of insecurity. Many people believe that brave people are not afflicted by this malady. The truth is different. Every one feels the fear of unknown. Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to manage fear without getting paralyzed. Feel the fear, but move on regardless.

Sixth, keep renewing yourself.
This prepares you to anticipate change and be ready for it when it comes. Constantly ask yourself what new skills and competencies will be needed. Begin working on them before it becomes necessary and you will have a natural advantage. The greatest benefit of your education lies not only in what you have learnt, but also in working how to learn. Formal education is the beginning of the journey of learning. Yet I do meet youngsters who feel that they have already learnt all there is to learn. You have to constantly learn about people and how to interact effectively with them. In the world of tomorrow, only those individuals and organizations will succeed who have mastered the art of rapid and on-going learning.

Seventh, surround yourself with people who are open to change.
If you are always in the company of cynics, you will soon find yourself becoming like them. A cynic knows all the reasons why something cannot be done. Instead, spend time with people who have a "can-do" approach. Choose your advisors and mentors correctly.Pessimism is contagious, but then so is enthusiasm. In fact, reasonable optimism can be an amazing force multiplier.

Eighth, play to win .
I have said this many times in the past. Playing to win is not the same as cutting corners. When you play to win, you stretch yourself to your maximum and use all your potential. It also helps you to concentrate your energy on what you can influence instead of getting bogged down with the worry of what you cannot change. Do your best and leave the rest.

Ninth, respect yourself . The world will reward you on your successes. Success requires no explanation and failure permits none. But you need to respect yourself enough so that your self-confidence remains intact whether you succeed or fail. If you succeed 90 percent of the time, you are doing fine. If you are succeeding all the time, you should ask yourself if you are taking enough risks. If you do not take enough risks, you may also be losing out on many opportunities. Think through but take the plunge. If somethings do go wrong, learn from them. I came across this interesting story some time ago: One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and begin to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that fell on his back, the donkey was doing some thing amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and totted off! Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick is to not to get bogged down by it. We can get out of the deepest wells by not stopping. And by never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Tenth, in spite of all the change around you, decide upon what you will never change - your core values .
Take you time to decide what they are but once you do, do not compromise on them for any reason. Integrity is one such value.

Finally, we must remember that succeeding in a changing world is beyond just surviving.
It is our responsibility to create and contribute something to the world that has given us so much.

We must remember that many have contributed to our success, including our parents and others from our society. All of us have a responsibility to utilize our potential for making our nation a better place for others, who may not be as well endowed as us, or as fortunate in having the opportunities that we have got.

Let us do our bit, because doing one good deed can have multiple benefits not only for us but also for many others. Let me end my talk with a small story I came across some time back, which illustrates this very well.

This is a story of a poor Scottish farmer whose name was Fleming. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the boy from what could have been a slow and terrifying death. The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the scotsman's sparse surroundings.
An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy farmer Fleming had saved. "I want to repay you, "said the nobleman. "Yes," the farmer replied proudly. "I'll make you a deal. Let me take your son and give him a good education. If he's anything like his father, he'll grow to be a man you can be proud of." And that he did. In time, Farmer Fleming's son graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the nobleman's son was stricken with pneumonia. What saved him? Penicillin. This is not the end.

The nobleman's son also made a great contribution to society. For the nobleman was none other than Lord Randolph Churchill and his son's name was Winston Churchill.

Let us use all our talent, competence and energy for creating peace and happiness for the world."
