Varun was watching the news and they were annoucing the winner for the mega million lottery which won by a person from Georgia. While he watching it, he remembered those days when he was a kid his dad used to bring home a bunch of lottery tickets with different colors and images.
I even played with them when its of no use. I feel that the short way of getting what you wanted is all about luck.
"Do I believe in luck ?", I don't think so varun told to himself.
Back then, lotteries were sold by different state governments. My father used to get few from our own state(TN) especially on special festival releases which always carried high prize figures and costs more. You only get what you paid for right! But there was always some attractive and famous out of state lotteries from Meghalaya, Assam, Andhara, list never ends. They attracted people with some jazzy posters and juicy prize figures. People always tempted to buy one of them at least to try their luck to win just a 100's.
He would then wait for the drawing dates to see the results. Some lotteries had daily drawing which only carried less prize money. One with monthly or biweekly drawings carried more prize money. He rarely bought daily ones. Since he bought monthly lotteries, he would wait like a "parrot in the cotton tree waiting for the fruit to ripe". On the result day like a student waiting for the exam results, he would first hit the lottery section to see whether he won something.
He always check his numbers listed in low prizes first and he would move on to see the high figure prizes. Just a small longing to win at least a low prize.I wanted to show the lottery but couldn't find the exact image. Anyways, let me try to picture it. Each lottery will have unique number. The way it works is like, lets say you have number "E1353454554". If you see last 2 digit in the result under Rs.20, you won Rs.20. If you see last 4 digit under Rs.100, you won Rs.100. Its goes on like that.
Sometimes he was lucky enough to win a prizes. That's right prizes ranging from just Rs.20 to Rs.100 and sometimes he would have missed big prizes in just single or double figures. But most of time, he never won any penny. He almost lost all the time. I never known anybody who I won big prizes in the lottery. So I always wondered whether its all a big setup like any other business drawings. My father use to convince me in a way of convincing himself by saying, NO its legitimate and government under sees the directly. They won't cheat or deceive the people. I just listened to him like every other kid. But my small mind said that its all some sort of magic and never believe in it.
Its almost 17-18years now. They just recently vanished the lottery system in TamilNadu and other states (good thing!!) because it totally destroyed lots of poor and middle class families. And after been thru some rollercoaster ride in my own life, I had learnt some good lessons. It always taught me that LUCK is just a gimmick like a greeting card with happiness short lived.
My Mantra, Do what you do best and keep doing it. Hard work never fails. I don't think I ever will knowingly spend money to get more money without breaking a sweat. I always thought whatever gets to you free always finds the other way out. That's a true statement from a person who has a real proof .
Every other Friday, we used to go to the super market to buy groceries. One day, when we got back home and I was cross checking the items with the bills. I would see some items got missed out and not paid. Its mostly heavy small prized items like canned water which we slide under the shopping basket and forgot to bill them. I wonder those store code detectors ever work on small prized items. At that time, I used to think, OK! we got something free without paying it (accident happens!).
Next time, when we went to the grocery shopping in spite of me closely watching the cashier, I would see the bills having double entry for same item. I just paid it back what got free last time Nowadays, whenever it happens again, I always think when its going to go out of my pocket. I have few other interesting incidents happen to me like this one.
My take, I don't ever just believe in luck and wait for something to happen and I never will! I am true believer of hard work and leave it up to God, it always pay off big returns. Some might argue that luck is another face of gods love. That's totally a different topic altogether and I am not going talk about..
Varun suddenly got back from his self realization tour when he heard a high volume advertisement popped in between the news..
